James Armistead-Lafayette was born into slavery to owner William Armistead around December 10, 1748, in New Kent, Virginia. In 1781, after the siege of Richmond, James Armistead volunteered to join the U.S. Army in order to fight for the American Revolution. His master granted him permission to join the revolutionary cause, and the American Continental Army stationed James Armistead to serve under the Marquis de Lafayette, the commander of allied French forces. He became the first "double spy" because he was working for the British in the staff of General Benedict Arnold, but was in effect spying for General Washington. As a member of Benedict Arnold's staff he could hear critical tactical information (intelligence) which in turn he reported to Lafayette and Washington. He admired the young French commander and took his name, hence the addition of the name Lafayette.
